They do have a limit on how many people you can add as friends at any given time. This is to stop people from just adding people and emailing them, which is why you got a spam alert as you were adding people and adding the same message.

Some people have had their account deleted due to excessive adding.

You really should limit your "adds" to about 50-75 people a day.

You can go back to adding again now that you've not done it for several days.
